DMK president M.K. Stalin hailed the Madras High Court judgment refusing permission to reopen the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, characterizing the judicial ruling as a historic triumph for public health, environmental justice, and local communities. The division bench upheld the permanent closure orders issued by the state pollution control board, recognizing the profound ecological degradation and groundwater contamination caused by the industrial complex over several decades.
Stalin paid respectful homage to the thirteen unarmed civilian protesters who were killed in police firing during the peaceful anti-Sterlite agitation in May 2018. He demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately convene a state cabinet meeting to pass a dedicated legislative enactment codifying the permanent shutdown, preventing future corporate attempts to bypass environmental regulations through protracted litigation. The ruling administration must also provide comprehensive legal justice and adequate compensation to victims' families.
Asserting that industrial progress must never compromise human lives and natural ecology, Stalin called on the government to protect public welfare over corporate profits. He reaffirmed the DMK's steadfast solidarity with Thoothukudi residents, pledging ongoing vigilance to safeguard environmental rights and hold responsible officials accountable.
