Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin personally met with a delegation of striking Swiggy food delivery workers in Chennai who represented their severe grievances regarding drastic wage reductions and precarious working conditions imposed amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The delivery personnel explained their ongoing struggle and highlighted how corporate platform management had drastically slashed delivery payouts and incentive structures, severely degrading their daily take-home earnings despite escalating personal health risks during the contagion.

Stalin expressed deep concern over the ruthless exploitation of gig economy delivery workers, emphasizing that stripping away the livelihood security of frontline delivery personnel during an unprecedented public health disaster is profoundly unjust. While delivery executives performed essential courier duties, risking viral exposure to supply food and medicines to locked-down citizens, corporate management rewarded their dedication with unfair wage slashes. Stalin criticized the state labor department for remaining completely indifferent to the plight of thousands of youth employed in the digital platform sector.

Urging Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to abandon administrative apathy, Stalin demanded immediate personal intervention by the government to initiate tri-partite labor conciliation talks. He affirmed that the DMK will resolutely defend gig workers' rights and fair wages.
