DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly demanded that the Reserve Bank of India and the Union government extend the moratorium on bank loan equated monthly installments for an additional six months beyond the August 31 deadline. Stalin pointed out that ending the repayment moratorium abruptly during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic came as an alarming economic shock to millions of salaried individuals, self-employed professionals, and struggling micro, small, and medium enterprises across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin explained that prolonged industrial lockdowns, severe supply chain disruptions, and dampened consumer demand had completely severed the financial circulation of small businesses and domestic households. Expecting fragile business units and working families to resume loan repayments while their revenues remained severely depressed would inevitably trigger mass bankruptcies, widespread factory closures, and massive job retrenchments. He argued that banking institutions should support the productive economy during unprecedented health emergencies rather than enforcing aggressive loan recovery measures.
Calling upon central authorities to exhibit economic realism and social empathy, Stalin urged immediate policy intervention to provide extended loan deferrals and structured interest relief. He reaffirmed that supporting small industries is vital to preserving industrial employment across India.
