Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound anguish following the tragic death by suicide of school student Nithyashree, who ended her life following household distress over the lack of an Android smartphone required to attend online classes. Stalin described the heartbreaking incident as a direct consequence of governmental negligence and policy blindness during the Covid-19 health emergency. He noted that forcing schools into remote instruction without addressing systemic socio-economic inequalities places unbearable emotional pressure on underprivileged children.

Stalin stressed that millions of working-class and rural households in Tamil Nadu lack access to multiple digital devices, reliable high-speed internet connectivity, or basic electricity infrastructure. By mandating online schooling without providing standardized digital tablets or telecast-based alternatives, the government exacerbated the digital divide, excluding impoverished students from fundamental educational access. He maintained that educational access must remain universal, equitable, and non-discriminatory across all socio-economic strata.

Demanding an immediate suspension of coercive online evaluation frameworks, Stalin urged the state administration to ensure equal access and distribute free digital learning devices to needy students before conducting virtual curricula. He affirmed that no child should lose their life due to administrative failure.
