DMK president M.K. Stalin recounted the historic milestones achieved under former Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in establishing and defending postgraduate medical reservations for in-service government doctors in Tamil Nadu. Responding to misleading claims by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Stalin advised the ruling AIADMK leadership to study administrative history before making misinformed statements regarding medical quotas. He highlighted that the foundation of in-service medical reservation was systematically crafted through visionary DMK governance.
Stalin detailed how the DMK government instituted postgraduate medical reservations for government service doctors in 1989, subsequently issuing an expansive Government Order in 1999 extending benefits across the public health cadre. When these progressive policies faced judicial challenges, the DMK administration fought a determined legal battle in the Madras High Court in 2001, securing a landmark legal victory that upheld weightage marks and quotas for rural-serving doctors. These affirmative actions anchored Tamil Nadu's exceptional primary healthcare system.
Reaffirming the DMK's enduring defense of social justice, Stalin emphasized that Kalaignar's policy decisions created the robust public healthcare network that sustains Tamil Nadu today. He declared that the DMK will always defend doctors' rights.
