In the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, #QuestionHour is more pertinent than ever as citizens need transparent information. Suspension of this proceeding, undermines the role of opposition that is key to democracy.
I urge @PMOIndia to reverse this decision on priority.
DMK president M.K. Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reverse the Union government's decision to suspend Question Hour during the upcoming parliamentary session, describing the move as a serious subversion of democratic accountability. Stalin stated that in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic and widespread economic distress, Question Hour is more pertinent than ever, as citizens require transparent, verified information regarding public health management, migrant welfare, and economic recovery measures.
Stalin highlighted that parliamentary scrutiny represents the cornerstone of constitutional democracy, allowing elected opposition lawmakers to question executive policies and represent constituent concerns directly before national ministries. Arbitrarily truncating legislative proceedings under the pretext of pandemic constraints undermines the constitutional role of the opposition and shields the ruling establishment from legitimate public oversight. He noted that functioning parliaments worldwide maintain questioning procedures precisely during emergencies to strengthen civic confidence.
Calling upon the Union government to respect parliamentary conventions, Stalin stressed that executive transparency cannot be compromised without harming democratic norms. He urged the Prime Minister's Office to prioritize restoring Question Hour, ensuring robust parliamentary debate and responsible governance across India.
