DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly countered assertions made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah claiming that Hindi serves as an overarching unifying language across India. Stalin asserted that attempting to elevate Hindi above other constitutionally recognized national languages undermines India's composite unity and threatens its foundational linguistic diversity. He stated that India's true democratic cohesion derives from mutual respect among diverse linguistic cultures, not from the coercive imposition of a single regional tongue over non-Hindi speaking populations.
Stalin advised the Union Home Minister to concentrate central administrative focus and national resources on containing the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and reviving the shattered economy rather than aggressively promoting linguistic hegemony. He pointed out that imposing Hindi through federal entrance examinations, administrative communications, and educational policies alienates millions of citizens in non-Hindi speaking states. Stalin reminded New Delhi that Tamil Nadu has historically spearheaded heroic linguistic resistance movements and will never accept second-class citizenship within the federal union.
Reaffirming the DMK's resolute commitment to linguistic equality, Stalin demanded that the Union government accord equal constitutional status to all twenty-two regional languages in the Eighth Schedule.
