DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to categorically refuse permission for open field trials of genetically modified Bt brinjal seeds permitted by the Union Ministry of Environment. Warning against the long-term ecological and financial hazards of transgenic crops, Stalin stressed that introducing patented seed varieties threatens native biodiversity and compromises indigenous farming methods. He cautioned that permitting genetically altered crops would subordinate local agriculturalists to multinational seed corporations.
Stalin recalled that previous administrations and agricultural scientists had resisted commercial GM crop introduction in Tamil Nadu due to health uncertainties, potential soil degradation, and risks of cross-pollinating native cultivars. He argued that seed sovereignty forms the foundational pillar of food security, which cannot be surrendered to commercial monopolies seeking exclusive proprietary rights over food production. Stalin emphasized that indigenous agricultural traditions have sustained rural communities across generations without creating dangerous corporate dependencies.
Demanding clear administrative intervention, Stalin insisted that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami issue an official order banning GM brinjal testing in the state. He affirmed that the DMK will stand beside environmental experts and farming collectives to safeguard agricultural self-reliance and preserve local biodiversity.
