DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Tamil Nadu police for intercepting and arresting thousands of DMK women's wing members and leaders who participated in a peaceful candlelight procession in Chennai demanding justice for the Hathras gang rape victim. Stalin stated that clamping down on non-violent citizens holding candles to express solidarity with an oppressed Dalit family was an intolerable abuse of police power, matching the authoritarian brutality seen in Uttar Pradesh.
Stalin questioned whether Tamil Nadu was being governed by the AIADMK or directly controlled as an extension of the BJP's autocratic apparatus. He pointed out that while democratic protests against sexual violence were suppressed with heavy-handed detentions, criminals and perpetrators of violence against women roamed freely without fear of prosecution. Stalin condemned the state administration for attempting to silence legitimate public indignation against horrific caste atrocities and governmental complicity.
Stalin demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detained women activists, including Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi. He warned the state government to immediately abandon its coercive tactics and respect constitutional rights to peaceful democratic assembly without police intimidation.
