DMK president M.K. Stalin dispatched official letters to the chief ministers of nine states, including Telangana, Kerala, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Puducherry, expressing deep appreciation for their firm resistance against central GST compensation proposals. Stalin urged the state leaders to coordinate their parliamentary and administrative efforts, calling on them to vote unitedly against the borrowing options proposed by the Union Finance Ministry at the upcoming GST Council meeting.
Stalin emphasized that the Centre was legally and constitutionally bound under the GST Compensation Act to fully reimburse states for revenue shortfalls resulting from tax harmonization. He warned that allowing the Union government to transfer its debt obligations onto state balance sheets would permanently cripple regional finances and dismantle constitutional federalism. Stalin stated that state governments were already bearing enormous financial burdens combating the pandemic and required immediate financial transfers, not additional commercial debt burdens.
Stalin stressed that collective inter-state solidarity was critical to halt unilateral central decisions. He affirmed the DMK's enduring support for cooperative regional efforts to preserve constitutional fiscal autonomy, protect state revenues, and resist centralized economic imposition.
