DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately establish an urban employment guarantee scheme modelled on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. He highlighted that widespread job losses and acute wage reductions caused by prolonged pandemic disruptions had pushed urban working-class families into severe financial distress. Stalin reminded Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami that the DMK had repeatedly demanded a direct cash relief transfer of five thousand rupees per vulnerable family, which the government refused to disburse.
Stalin criticized the administration for relying on cosmetic public relations announcements while ordinary citizens struggled to meet everyday food and housing expenses. He explained that rural employment initiatives offered a basic social safety net, but urban informal workers, daily wage laborers, and small vendors remained entirely unprotected during economic downturns. Stalin emphasized that a dedicated urban job program would provide dignified livelihood support, revive local consumption, and create useful public infrastructure in cities.
Stalin demanded that the state cabinet stop hollow posturing and formulate a concrete urban employment policy without delay. He pledged that the DMK would continue pressing for comprehensive economic support for distressed municipal households.
