DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound alarm over extensive waterlogging across Chennai following a single day of intense rainfall, warning that the urban crisis evoked harrowing memories of the catastrophic December 2015 floods. Stalin held Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami directly responsible for the city's vulnerability, asserting that widespread corruption and unexecuted stormwater drain projects had crippled civic infrastructure. He pointed out that major arterial roadways, residential neighborhoods, and bus corridors across Chennai were submerged within hours of rain.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately deploy national and state disaster response forces on a war footing to drain waterlogged zones, clear choked micro-canals, and rescue stranded residents. He emphasized that the municipal administration's failure to undertake pre-monsoon desilting operations had left millions of urban citizens exposed to water-borne diseases, power disruptions, and structural hazards. Stalin urged authorities to open temporary relief shelters and distribute food packets and medical supplies to low-lying settlements.
Stalin reaffirmed that a future DMK government would reconstruct Chennai's drainage master plan using scientific hydrology and eliminate systemic contractor corruption to safeguard the state capital.
