DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit for indefinitely delaying the release of seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, terming the inaction an inhumane abuse of constitutional authority. He emphasized that the convicts, including A.G. Perarivalan, had already spent twenty-nine years incarcerated, far exceeding standard life sentences. Stalin pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Cabinet had unanimously recommended their premature release under Article 161 of the Constitution as early as September 2018, yet the Governor sat on the file for over two years without valid justification.
Stalin criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for remaining a passive spectator instead of exerting constitutional pressure on the Governor to honor the cabinet's formal decision. He asserted that the prolonged indecision violated fundamental human rights and contradicted democratic conventions that bind gubernatorial authority to council advice. Stalin noted that legal authorities and human rights activists across India had repeatedly highlighted Perarivalan's deteriorating health and exemplary prison conduct.
Stalin demanded that the Governor immediately approve the cabinet resolution granting remission. He pledged that the DMK would continue constitutional efforts to secure justice for the seven prisoners.
