DMK president M.K. Stalin addressed a formal letter to the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit, urging him to immediately approve the state cabinet's recommendation for the premature release of the seven long-incarcerated convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Stalin pointed out that Perarivalan, Murugan, Santhan, Nalini, Robert Payas, Jayakumar, and Ravichandran had spent nearly thirty years in continuous prison confinement, enduring prolonged incarceration well beyond normal life sentences.
Highlighting the constitutional mandate under Article 161, Stalin noted that the Tamil Nadu Cabinet had passed a unanimous resolution as early as September 2018 recommending their remission, which has remained pending without decision at Raj Bhavan for over two years. Citing recent Supreme Court observations expressing displeasure over the protracted delay, Stalin stressed that constitutional functionaries must respect judicial directives and the sovereign advice of elected state cabinets. He emphasized that humanitarian mercy and natural justice demand their immediate release.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK has maintained an unyielding political and legal struggle to secure their liberation. He urged the Governor to act without further hesitation and honor the collective democratic will of Tamil Nadu.
