DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the ruling AIADMK government for halting the vital Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor project initiated by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and subsequently inflating its budget to 5,000 crore rupees under the guise of a double-decker bridge. Stalin questioned whether the radical redesign and massive financial escalation were motivated primarily by corrupt commissions rather than practical engineering necessity.
Backing a massive public demonstration led by DMK South Chennai district secretary Ma. Subramanian, Stalin emphasized that vital pillars and structural foundations had already been erected along the Cooum riverbed before the AIADMK abruptly paralyzed work due to political vendetta. He pointed out that abandoning the half-finished elevated corridor for nearly a decade had caused severe traffic bottlenecks across Chennai, choked heavy commercial transit to Chennai Port, and wasted public funds. Stalin demanded that the project proceed swiftly along its original planned alignment.
Stalin asserted that an incoming DMK administration would prioritize completing major urban transit arteries without wasteful redesigns or corrupt delays. He reiterated the DMK's commitment to modernizing metropolitan transport infrastructure and delivering long-overdue relief to congested city commuters.
