Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly objected to the Election Commission of India's decision allowing polling officials to collect postal ballots directly from the homes of citizens aged eighty and above, warning that the mechanism severely undermines the sanctity of secret voting. Terming the controversial procedure a perilous step that buries democratic transparency, Stalin described it as a replica of the questionable Bihar model designed to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party alliance through administrative manipulation.

Stalin criticized the election authorities for unilaterally enforcing such consequential procedural alterations without conducting comprehensive consultations with recognized national and regional political parties. He pointed out that door-to-door ballot collection exposes vulnerable elderly electors to external coercion, political intimidation, and systemic malpractice by ruling party apparatuses. Stalin asserted that maintaining tamper-proof integrity and absolute voter privacy inside polling booths represents the core foundation of Indian electoral democracy that must never be compromised.

Urging the Election Commission to immediately revoke the arbitrary notification, Stalin demanded that transparent voting arrangements be ensured for all citizens. He emphasized that the DMK would remain vigilant against any attempt to dilute democratic norms ahead of the 2021 Tamil Nadu legislative elections.
