DMK president M.K. Stalin led a party delegation to Raj Bhavan to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, formally urging him to accept the state cabinet's recommendation for the premature release of the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including A.G. Perarivalan. Stalin pointed out that the convicts had endured nearly three decades of incarceration, emphasizing that prolonged imprisonment beyond standard life terms warrants compassionate executive clemency under Article 161 of the Constitution. He reminded the Governor that the state cabinet had passed a unanimous resolution recommending their release following sustained DMK pressure.
Stalin expressed hope that a positive decision would emerge swiftly, noting that the Supreme Court had repeatedly clarified that the Governor possesses full constitutional power to decide on cabinet advice. He criticized the unconscionable administrative delays that had kept the file pending at Raj Bhavan for over two years, causing immense emotional anguish to aging parents, particularly Perarivalan's mother Arputhammal. Stalin stressed that humanitarian principles and justice must prevail over political considerations.
The meeting renewed public attention on the long-pending clemency plea. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's steadfast commitment to securing the convicts' freedom.
