DMK president M.K. Stalin announced that leaders, Members of Parliament, and Members of the Legislative Assembly representing the Secular Progressive Alliance would observe a day-long symbolic hunger strike in Chennai on December 18, 2020. Stalin stated that the peaceful collective action aimed to express heartfelt solidarity with hundreds of thousands of farmers demonstrating along New Delhi borders against three contentious central farm laws. He declared that the DMK and its allies would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the farming community until their demands are fully met.
Stalin condemned the central government for its rigid stance against agricultural producers who feed the nation, noting that peaceful dissent had been met with barricades, water cannons, and administrative indifference. He criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for betraying Tamil Nadu agrarian interests by voting in favor of the legislations in Parliament. Stalin emphasized that the Chennai demonstration would demonstrate the resolute moral support of Tamil society for agricultural sovereignty and constitutional federalism.
The announcement energized democratic allies, trade unions, and agrarian collectives across the state. Stalin reaffirmed that the alliance remains committed to defending farmers livelihoods through persistent democratic advocacy.
