DMK president M.K. Stalin announced that the DMK Women Wing, led by party deputy general secretary and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, will stage massive protest demonstrations across all district headquarters on December 21, 2020. Stalin pointed out that the Union government had sharply increased the price of domestic liquefied petroleum gas cylinders at a time when families were already reeling from the combined economic blows of the COVID-19 pandemic, job losses, and devastating cyclonic storm damage across Tamil Nadu.

Stalin emphasized that the sudden price hike dealt a severe blow to homemakers, domestic budgets, and daily wage-earning families struggling to afford basic household sustenance. He criticized the central administration for repeatedly shifting financial burdens onto ordinary citizens while offering tax concessions to large corporate conglomerates. Stalin also condemned Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for remaining silent rather than demanding an immediate price reduction on behalf of Tamil Nadu mothers and working women.

The protest call received enthusiastic backing from women self-help federations, trade unions, and civil society organizations statewide. Stalin affirmed that defending the economic well-being and domestic dignity of women remains a foremost priority of Dravidian social welfare politics.
