Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration for imposing an onerous municipal user fee for garbage collection, characterizing the levy as an exploitative burden on pandemic-hit households and commercial establishments. Stalin observed that while working-class families and small merchants were grappling with unprecedented financial disruption and loss of earnings, the Municipal Administration Department under S.P. Velumani had chosen to extract additional revenue through punitive municipal levies instead of providing economic relief.

Stalin called upon Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to immediately direct the municipal authorities to withdraw the controversial garbage tax order. He issued a resolute promise that if the ruling regime failed to act, an incoming DMK government would revoke the notification on its very first day in office. Stalin emphasized that maintaining urban cleanliness and solid waste management is an essential municipal obligation funded through existing property taxes, not a commercial commodity to be monetized at the expense of struggling citizens.

The firm intervention mobilized resident welfare associations, trade bodies, and municipal activists across urban local bodies. Stalin reaffirmed that compassionate municipal administration must alleviate citizen difficulties rather than inventing arbitrary tax burdens.
