DMK president M.K. Stalin exposed serious administrative irregularities and fiscal callousness in the AIADMK government procurement of protective face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stalin stated that under the pretext of distributing free face masks to the public, state authorities engaged in fraudulent tender allocations, paying inflated rates while failing to settle legitimate dues owed to local manufacturers. Approximately five crore manufactured face masks remained stranded in warehouses, leaving thousands of women self-help group workers and small-scale garment producers in severe economic distress.
Stalin criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, charging that the administration consistently ranked first only in irregularities, financial kickbacks, and contractor favoritism. Women tailoring collectives and rural self-help groups had invested their personal savings and borrowed capital to produce masks on urgent government requests, only to face administrative apathy and non-payment for months.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately release all pending payments to the struggling women workers with appropriate interest. He promised that an incoming DMK administration will institute an inquiry into pandemic tender contracts and ensure that grassroots self-help groups receive institutional protection and regular procurement payments.
