Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly opposed the notification issued by the Bar Council of India introducing the Post Graduate Common Entrance Test in Law, known as PGCETL, for admissions to Master of Laws degree programs. Stalin cautioned that implementing a centralized qualifying examination for legal studies mirrors the exclusionary consequences of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, which devastated the medical education aspirations of rural and economically backward students.

Stalin argued that the centralized entrance mechanism infringes upon state legislative autonomy and deprives regional law graduates of equal educational opportunity. Centralized computer-based tests, he noted, inherently disadvantage rural candidates who lack access to expensive private coaching academies. He stressed that instead of imposing nationwide standardization that discriminates against marginalized communities, the regulatory body should focus on enhancing infrastructure, library facilities, and pedagogical standards across state government law colleges.

Stalin demanded the immediate withdrawal of the contentious PGCETL notification. He reiterated the DMK staunch defense of states rights over higher education, asserting that federalism and social justice must guide entrance policies so that legal education remains accessible to all aspiring scholars.
