DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to introduce urgent fiscal concessions, including entertainment tax exemptions, to rescue families dependent on the cinema industry from severe financial distress caused by COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Stalin cited the proactive policy decisions taken by the Kerala government under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as an exemplary model for regional governance. Kerala had announced comprehensive concessions and tax relief to stabilize its film exhibition sector and protect thousands of daily wage technicians and auxiliary workers.
Stalin emphasized that the prolonged closure of movie theatres and the suspension of film production activities had devastated the livelihood security of thousands of low-income workers, light technicians, costume designers, and theatre employees across Tamil Nadu. He stressed that without prompt state support, the cultural and economic ecosystem of the regional entertainment sector faces irreparable damage.
Beyond cinema, Stalin called upon Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to formulate targeted economic relief packages and welfare concessions for workers across other severely distressed informal sectors. He maintained that compassionate fiscal assistance is indispensable to help vulnerable households overcome acute economic stagnation during public health emergencies.
