DMK president M.K. Stalin urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to immediately withdraw hundreds of thousands of police cases registered against citizens under the Disaster Management Act and Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code during COVID-19 lockdowns. Stalin pointed out that ordinary citizens, students, and youth were booked indiscriminately for minor movement infractions while struggling to procure food, medicines, or emergency assistance during unprecedented pandemic restrictions.
Stalin highlighted that the pendency of these criminal charges severely jeopardizes the livelihoods of young people across Tamil Nadu. Unresolved police records prevent graduates from obtaining mandatory police clearance certificates required for government recruitment, private employment, higher education admissions, and passport processing. He argued that it is profoundly unfair and callous to penalize youth permanently for minor violations committed during a global public health humanitarian crisis.
Stalin demanded immediate executive orders from the state government to quash all such lockdown-related cases without procedural delay. He pledged that if the incumbent administration fails to act with empathy, an incoming DMK government will promptly dismiss all pandemic misdemeanor cases to protect youth careers and secure their aspirations.
