DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the tragic collapse of a dilapidated commercial building on Melamasi Street in Madurai, which claimed two lives. Stalin recalled that during the previous Diwali festival, a similar structural collapse in Madurai had resulted in the tragic deaths of two courageous firefighters. He criticized the AIADMK administration for failing to learn vital lessons or conduct mandatory structural safety audits of aging municipal properties across urban centers.
Stalin questioned whether the ruling regime was exclusively focused on collecting kickbacks from municipal contractors while showing total indifference to the safety of ordinary citizens and municipal workers. He demanded that the state government immediately provide substantial ex-gratia compensation and comprehensive rehabilitation assistance to the families of the deceased and injured victims. Stalin urged urban development and municipal authorities to immediately inspect and condemn precarious heritage buildings to avert future disasters.
The statement drew widespread attention to neglected urban infrastructure safety standards across historic Tamil Nadu cities. Stalin reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring rigorous municipal safety regulations, modern civic planning, and prompt emergency response systems.
