DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the landmark Madras High Court verdict quashing a second breach of privilege notice issued against him and fellow DMK legislators by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Privileges Committee. The controversial notices had been issued after DMK members displayed banned gutkha packets inside the legislative assembly in 2017 to expose the rampant, illegal sale of prohibited tobacco products and highlight alleged ministerial bribery in the gutkha scam.
Stalin pointed out that those who accepted illegal commissions had repeatedly attempted to silence the opposition by misusing parliamentary privilege mechanisms, only to be struck down twice by the judiciary. He remarked that if the AIADMK administration had demonstrated even a fraction of this urgency and vigor in halting the illegal trafficking of toxic gutkha and arresting culpable kingpins, thousands of young lives could have been protected from substance abuse. Stalin declared that the era of political cover-ups and corruption under the gutkha government was rapidly approaching its end.
The court ruling was hailed as a major victory for democratic accountability and parliamentary oversight. Stalin reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating substance trafficking and restoring integrity to public life across Tamil Nadu.
