Shocked by the police arrest of #DishaRavi on flimsy charges.
Silencing critics of the government through authoritarian means is not the rule of law.
I urge the BJP govt to desist from taking such punitive action & instead listen to the voices of dissent from young persons.
DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound shock and strong condemnation over the police arrest of twenty-two-year-old climate activist Disha Ravi on unsubstantiated and flimsy charges related to an online farmers protest toolkit. In a categorical public statement, Stalin declared that deploying authoritarian police mechanisms to intimidate, harass, and silence peaceful critics of government policy was completely incompatible with the constitutional rule of law. He emphasized that peaceful dissent remained the lifeblood of a vibrant democratic society.
Stalin urged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government to immediately cease heavy-handed punitive actions against young environmental and social justice advocates. Instead of suppressing democratic expression through coercive state agencies, he advised the central leadership to listen patiently and constructively to the genuine concerns articulated by young citizens standing in solidarity with protesting farmers. Stalin stressed that criminalizing peaceful activism damaged India international reputation as a constitutional democracy committed to fundamental human rights and free expression.
The strong intervention received widespread appreciation from civil liberties organizations, student unions, and legal scholars nationwide. Stalin reaffirmed the DMK unwavering dedication to defending democratic freedoms across India.
