DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union government for continuous increases in petrol, diesel, and cooking gas cylinder prices, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of worsening the cost of living for ordinary citizens. In an official communication to party members, Stalin criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for meekly endorsing central economic policies rather than standing up for the economic welfare of Tamil Nadu households. He announced that the DMK would stage massive protest demonstrations across all district headquarters on February 22, 2021.

Stalin emphasized that spiraling fuel tariffs inflicted severe distress on working families, transport operators, daily wage earners, and homemakers already recovering from pandemic disruptions. He noted that despite fluctuating international crude oil prices, exorbitant central excise duties and state levies kept consumer prices at punitive levels. Stalin called upon all affected citizens, trade union workers, and civil society groups to join the DMK demonstrations in large numbers to register collective democratic outrage against both central and state administrations.

The protest call gathered immediate backing from alliance parties across the state. Stalin asserted that democratic resistance would compel accountability and relief.
