DMK president M.K. Stalin made a landmark policy announcement on February 20, 2021, during the Ungal Thoguthiyil Stalin tour, promising to completely waive all outstanding cooperative bank loans taken by women self-help groups. Stalin recalled that the revolutionary Self Help Groups movement was originally conceived and launched in Dharmapuri in 1989 by former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi, subsequently expanding under successive DMK governments into a monumental engine of women economic independence, financial literacy, and social emancipation across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin pointed out with deep regret that the vibrant self-help groups network was systematically paralyzed over the preceding decade under the uncaring AIADMK regime. He noted that revolving funds were stopped, government procurement linkages were severed, and hundreds of thousands of rural women were pushed into unbearable debt traps by microfinance institutions and cooperative banks. Stalin declared that an incoming DMK government would liberate women from crippling debt burdens through a total cooperative loan waiver, while restarting revolving funds, skill training, and dedicated marketing outlets to usher in a second renaissance for women entrepreneurship.
The announcement was greeted with thunderous cheers by women groups across the state. Stalin transformative pledge reaffirmed the DMK unwavering dedication to women empowerment and economic dignity.
