DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the high-handed arrest of Karur Member of Parliament S. Jothimani by the Tamil Nadu police on February 20, 2021. Stalin expressed outrage that police personnel had mistreated an elected woman parliamentarian who peacefully questioned the illegal midnight removal of a 70-year-old historic statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Karur. He pointed out that local authorities had dismantled the venerated monument under the guise of installing a substandard new statue, merely to enable ruling party functionaries to skim corrupt commissions from hasty, last-minute municipal contracts.
Stalin remarked that the AIADMK administration had utterly degraded democratic norms, using police machinery as an instrument of political coercion against women leaders and opposition representatives. He noted that while ruling party politicians engaged in brazen municipal looting without consequence, elected representatives seeking accountability were manhandled and detained. Stalin declared that the enlightened people of Karur and Tamil Nadu were closely observing these tyrannical excesses and would deliver a stinging democratic verdict against the corrupt regime in the upcoming assembly elections.
Democratic organizations, civil rights groups, and alliance party leaders echoed Stalin uncompromising condemnation. His swift intervention highlighted the DMK resolve to defend democratic rights, constitutional dignity, and women political safety.
