DMK president M.K. Stalin announced on February 21, 2021, during the Ungal Thoguthiyil Stalin tour that the long-pending Athikadavu-Avinashi ground water recharge and drinking water scheme would be comprehensively completed and expanded under an incoming DMK administration. Stalin reminded the public that the vital water project was originally conceived, surveyed, and initiated under previous DMK governments led by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. He accused the AIADMK administration of executing the project in a sluggish, half-hearted manner, leaving vital agricultural ponds and rural water bodies excluded from its irrigation coverage.
Stalin issued a stern warning against corrupt practices by ruling party ministers, particularly condemning Environment Minister K.C. Karuppannan for extorting bribes and floating irregular last-minute tenders ahead of the election code of conduct. Stalin declared that the very first duty of the new DMK government would be to cancel these fraudulent eleventh-hour contracts, punish corrupt extortionists, and redesign the scheme to provide comprehensive irrigation to all dryland villages across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode districts.
Farming organizations and water conservation activists enthusiastically supported Stalin resolute stance. His commitment guaranteed that the lifeline water initiative would be completed with integrity, restoring groundwater security for western Tamil Nadu.
