DMK president M.K. Stalin raised urgent concern on February 22, 2021, over the relentless escalation of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas cylinder prices, warning of catastrophic cascading inflation across Tamil Nadu. Stalin highlighted that surging fuel costs directly triggered sharp increases in public transport fares, freight charges, food commodities, groceries, and essential vegetable prices, severely crushing the household budgets of poor and middle-class families. He criticized the BJP Union government for unconscionably levying exorbitant excise duties while international crude oil prices remained relatively moderate.
Stalin pointed out that several other progressive state governments had already acted responsibly by reducing local Value Added Taxes and pressuring the Centre to roll back unjust levies. He sharply questioned why Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had failed to take any protective measures to provide fuel relief to Tamil Nadu citizens. Stalin pledged that an incoming DMK administration would champion common citizens by cutting state fuel taxes and demanding equitable fiscal federalism from the Centre to lower transportation and living costs.
Consumer forums, commuter groups, and transport operators welcomed Stalin forthright intervention. His demands highlighted the DMK proactive economic sensitivity toward working-class hardship and runaway commodity inflation.
