DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK state government on February 23, 2021, for its harsh crackdown and mass arrest of protesting Anganwadi workers across Tamil Nadu. Stalin pointed out the glaring duplicity of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, who cynically announced the withdrawal of cases against protesters for electoral gain on one hand while unleashing police intimidation and arrests against frontline child welfare workers on the other. He stated that Anganwadi workers performed vital services nurturing child nutrition, maternal care, and early education under challenging conditions.
Stalin highlighted the legitimate demands of Anganwadi employees, including regular time-scale pay, formal promotional pathways, gratuity benefits, and adequate pension allocations. He urged the striking workers not to despair before a deaf and heartless administration that cared nothing for working women. Stalin extended his firm solidarity, urging them to pause painful agitations and assuring them that an incoming DMK government would give compassionate consideration to all their demands and implement dignified service conditions.
The supportive statement brought immense solace to thousands of distressed Anganwadi and noon-meal employees statewide. Stalin empathetic intervention reaffirmed the DMK historic commitment to uplifting grassroots women welfare workers and restoring institutional dignity across state social welfare programs.
