DMK president M.K. Stalin responded on February 25, 2021, to the AIADMK government announcement raising the retirement age of state government employees from 59 to 60 years. Stalin pointed out the obvious political opportunism behind the move, questioning why Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had suddenly reversed course after years of insulting, suppressing, and arresting protesting government employees and teachers during their legitimate welfare agitations. He noted that the decision was clearly taken with an eye on the imminent assembly elections.

Stalin affirmed that the DMK, which had always stood as the steadfast champion of government servants and teachers, welcomed the welfare intent of the decision. However, he cautioned that extending the service period must not jeopardize recruitment prospects for millions of educated unemployed youths waiting for state recruitment examinations. Stalin demanded that the government formulate balanced administrative mechanisms to accelerate new recruitments, fill vacant posts across departments, and ensure that youth career opportunities are fully safeguarded.
