DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed serious concern on March 1, 2021, regarding the imminent closure of the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies at the University of Cologne in Germany due to severe financial deficits. Stalin pointed out that the AIADMK state government had previously announced a financial grant of Rs 1.24 crore to sustain the renowned academic department but failed to release the allocated funds. He criticized this bureaucratic apathy, stating that neglecting international Tamil research centers undermines the global prestige of the classical Tamil language.
Stalin urged the Union government and the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene promptly, coordinate with German diplomatic channels, and provide required institutional assistance to keep the historic Tamil department functioning. He emphasized that global research chairs and archival repositories preserve ancient Dravidian literary heritage for future generations. Stalin recalled that previous DMK governments under Kalaignar Karunanidhi consistently funded global Tamil initiatives, classical language status, and academic research institutions worldwide with exemplary cultural dedication.
Tamil scholars, academic faculties, and diaspora associations worldwide welcomed Stalin swift intervention. His statement brought crucial international attention to safeguarding overseas Tamil linguistic heritage.
