Editorial context

Urging strong diplomatic action on human rights and international justice, DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a statement on March 6, 2021, calling upon the Prime Minister of India to take decisive steps regarding Sri Lankan accountability. Stalin demanded that the Union government actively ensure that allegations of war crimes and atrocities committed against Eelam Tamils are referred to the International Court of Justice for an independent, time-bound trial. He stressed that lasting peace and genuine reconciliation in Sri Lanka remained impossible without full accountability for historical violations of international humanitarian law.

Stalin cautioned the Union government against adopting a compromising or supportive stance toward the Sri Lankan administration during upcoming sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. He asserted that India had a moral and regional obligation to stand firmly with the victimized Tamil community by supporting robust resolutions mandating international oversight. Stalin emphasized that safeguarding the political, civic, and linguistic rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka was an enduring priority deeply felt across Tamil Nadu.

The demand received broad support from Tamil diaspora groups, international human rights defenders, and regional political parties.
