Extending warm greetings on International Women Day on March 8, 2021, DMK president M.K. Stalin paid tribute to the indispensable contributions of women as mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters sustaining society. Stalin emphasized that real social progress required concrete economic autonomy for women rather than mere symbolic platitudes. He announced that the proposed monthly entitlement of Rs 1,000 for women heads of families was the foundational starting point of an expansive gender empowerment agenda to be implemented by an incoming DMK administration.
Stalin recalled that the Dravidian movement, under Periyar and Kalaignar Karunanidhi, had pioneered historic milestones for women rights in Tamil Nadu, including equal property rights, women reservation in local body elections, self-help groups, and marriage assistance schemes. He emphasized that direct cash assistance would provide unorganized women homemakers with financial independence, dignity, and economic resilience against rising living costs. Stalin pledged that future policy would prioritize higher education incentives, safe working conditions, and public transport concessions for working women.
The message was enthusiastically welcomed by women organizations, social activists, and self-help group federations statewide. Stalin vision underscored his unwavering commitment to advancing gender equality and structural social justice across Tamil Nadu.
