Unveiling a long-term agricultural revitalization vision ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, DMK president M.K. Stalin announced an ambitious land reclamation target on March 19, 2021. Stalin pledged that a DMK government would bring an additional 11.75 lakh hectares of fallow and cultivable wasteland under active cultivation, raising Tamil Nadu net cultivated area from the current 60 percent to 75 percent over the next decade. He highlighted that expanding crop acreage was vital for boosting state food security and strengthening rural agrarian livelihoods.

Stalin detailed practical measures to achieve this agricultural milestone, including scientific wasteland reclamation, extensive canal de-silting, micro-irrigation subsidies, and decentralized watershed management schemes. He promised dedicated financial and technical assistance to encourage organic farming, horticulture crops, and drought-resistant pulses on newly restored lands. Stalin emphasized that revitalizing neglected waterbodies and completing pending intra-state river linking links would provide dependable irrigation to arid farming belts, ensuring that small and marginal farmers could cultivate multiple cropping cycles annually.
