Editorial context

Unveiling a visionary ten-year urban master plan on March 20, 2021, DMK president M.K. Stalin announced that a DMK government would work systematically to position 15 cities from Tamil Nadu among the top 50 cities in India by the year 2031. Stalin noted that while Tamil Nadu already had 11 cities ranked among the nation best urban centers, purposeful infrastructure investments and sustainable urban planning could elevate four more municipal corporations to premier national standards.

Stalin detailed crucial focus areas for this urban transformation, including modern solid waste management, scientifically designed stormwater drainage networks, 24-hour piped drinking water systems, and integrated public transit networks. He emphasized that future city growth must be environmentally sustainable, prioritizing green open parks, lake restoration, and non-motorized transport corridors alongside industrial zoning. Stalin also pledged decentralized administrative autonomy for municipal bodies, ensuring local councils possessed adequate resources and technical expertise to manage urban expansion efficiently.

The strategic vision was warmly welcomed by town planners, urban economists, and trade bodies. Stalin forward-thinking roadmap highlighted his determination to maintain Tamil Nadu status as India most progressive, well-urbanized state.
