Pursuing humanitarian justice and asserting state constitutional prerogatives, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal letter to President of India Ram Nath Kovind requesting the immediate release of the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The letter was personally delivered to the President Secretariat in New Delhi by DMK Parliamentary Party Leader T.R. Baalu, demonstrating the state government active advocacy at the highest federal constitutional level.
In his communication, Stalin urged the President to accept the unanimous recommendation passed by the Tamil Nadu Cabinet in September 2018 under Article 161 of the Constitution, which recommended commuting the life sentences of all seven convicts. The Chief Minister pointed out that the incarcerated individuals had endured over three decades of unbroken imprisonment, suffering immense psychological distress and deteriorating health. Stalin emphasized that the overwhelming sentiment of Tamil society and all political parties in the state favored their humanitarian release.
Stalin principled constitutional advocacy reflected steadfast commitment to human rights and state legislative decisions. By actively petitioning the President to uphold the Tamil Nadu Cabinet resolution, his leadership championed humanitarian clemency and defended federal constitutional autonomy.
