Intervening urgently to protect the safety and legal rights of traditional seafaring communities, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent letter to Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Stalin sought immediate high-level diplomatic intervention to secure the release and repatriation of twenty-four Indian fishermen, including twenty traditional fishermen from Kanyakumari district, who were apprehended by Qatar maritime authorities while operating fishing vessels in Arabian Gulf waters.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the detained fishermen, who ventured abroad under contract to support impoverished rural households in coastal Tamil Nadu, were enduring acute psychological distress and legal vulnerability in foreign custody. Stalin urged the Ministry of External Affairs to direct the Indian Embassy in Doha to provide immediate consular access, legal representation, food provisions, and medical assistance to the incarcerated fishermen. He requested the Union Government to expedite diplomatic negotiations with Qatari authorities to drop immigration penalties and arrange their safe, prompt repatriation to Tamil Nadu.
Stalin swift diplomatic advocacy brought immense relief to anxious coastal families across Kanyakumari. By taking prompt institutional action to defend overseas workers, his leadership demonstrated vigilant guardianship over the global Tamil diaspora and seafaring laborers.
