Fulfilling the cherished hopes of the agrarian community right on the traditional calendar date, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin instructed water resources authorities to open the sluice gates of Stanley Reservoir at Mettur on June 12 for kuruvai paddy cultivation. Stalin announced that timely water discharge from the reservoir would provide guaranteed irrigation to 5.21 lakh agricultural acres across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and neighboring Cauvery delta districts, catalyzing early agricultural operations.
The Chief Minister emphasized that extensive preparations were executed systematically well ahead of the dam opening, with 647 desilting projects progressing rapidly along primary rivers, supply channels, and drainage canals throughout the delta network. Stalin assured farmers that meticulously scheduled waterway clearing would ensure irrigation flows reach tail-end agricultural fields without hindrance, preventing wastage and waterlogging. He expressed heartfelt optimism that prompt water availability coupled with state subsidized inputs would enable delta farmers to achieve record crop yields and secure prosperous family livelihoods.
