Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement condemning Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa unilateral announcement to construct the controversial Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river upon securing central clearance. Denouncing the move as an aggressive disregard for interstate judicial comity, Stalin pointed out that legitimate legal challenges filed by the Tamil Nadu government remain actively pending before the Supreme Court of India.
Stalin warned that constructing a massive storage reservoir at Mekedatu would permanently choke vital lower riparian flows, turning millions of fertile agricultural acres across the Cauvery delta into arid wastelands. The Chief Minister urged the Union Government to respect the final verdicts of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and Supreme Court by summarily rejecting all technical and environmental approvals sought by Karnataka. Stalin affirmed that the DMK government stands in steadfast defense of Tamil Nadu farming community, pledging unyielding resistance through legal, constitutional, and interstate diplomatic channels to preserve legitimate water entitlements.
Stalin unequivocal stand united political parties and agricultural associations across Tamil Nadu. By confronting unilateral interstate posturing with authoritative legal arguments, his decisive leadership safeguarded the lifeline of delta farmers and asserted the sovereign water rights of the state.
