Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dispatched an extensive, diplomatically firm letter to Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, urging the Karnataka government to abandon its contentious proposal to build a reservoir across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu. Addressing Karnataka argument that the project is required for Bengaluru drinking water needs, Stalin pointed out that a modest consumption demand of 4.75 TMC can never justify constructing a colossal 67.16 TMC reservoir that severely curtails statutory water releases to Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister emphasized that constructing the Mekedatu dam would violate the binding final verdict of the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Stalin warned that impounding surplus and normal flows upstream would choke life-giving irrigation to millions of acres of fertile delta farmland, inflicting catastrophic economic ruin on Tamil Nadu farmers and imperiling municipal drinking water across dozens of downstream towns. Stalin urged Yediyurappa to respect federal riparian principles and maintain inter-state harmony.

Stalin detailed representation demonstrated his proactive, evidence-based diplomacy in defending Tamil Nadu agricultural lifeline. By exposing the technical disproportion of Karnataka project, Stalin reaffirmed his administration resolve to protect historic river rights through every legal, constitutional, and diplomatic channel.
