Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed strongly worded formal communications to Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad and Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, demanding the total withdrawal of the contentious draft Cinematograph Amendment Bill, 2021. Stalin firmly asserted that depriving citizens and artists of creative expression severely undermines the foundational tenets of Indian democracy and runs directly contrary to constitutional guarantees enshrined under Article 19.

The Chief Minister expressed grave apprehension over proposed statutory provisions that empower the Union government to exercise revisional powers and re-examine films already certified by the statutory Central Board of Film Certification. Stalin emphasized that subjecting artistic creations to executive arbitrariness and post-certification bureaucratic scrutiny would paralyze vibrant film production industries, stifle critical creative thought, and dismantle institutional autonomy. He noted that cinema serves as a vital medium for social transformation and free cultural dialogue that must remain shielded from political suppression.

Stalin resolute representation was widely welcomed by filmmakers, artists, and civil liberty advocates nationwide. By fearlessly confronting central regulatory overreach and defending freedom of speech, Stalin reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding democratic rights and preserving artistic autonomy.
