Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent appeal to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, urging the Union government to formulate a comprehensive national policy and grant complete exemption from basic customs duties and goods and services tax on imported life-saving medicines for rare genetic disorders like Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Pointing out that treating a single child suffering from SMA requires astronomical expenses of nearly sixteen crore rupees, Stalin stressed that prohibitive drug taxes impose an unbearable financial burden on struggling parents.
The Chief Minister highlighted that ninety to one hundred children in Tamil Nadu are diagnosed with this debilitating condition every year, and urgent medical access is critical to saving their young lives. Stalin argued that humanitarian compassion must prevail over revenue considerations, urging the Centre to devise a subsidized procurement framework and permanent tax waivers for critical rare disease therapeutics.
Stalin compassionate federal intervention reflected his deep empathy and protective concern for vulnerable children and distressed families. By demanding decisive Union policy reforms for rare disease drugs, his leadership spotlighted an urgent healthcare disparity and fought to make life-saving therapies accessible to afflicted infants across India.
