Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the residence of veteran communist stalwart and legendary freedom fighter Comrade N. Sankaraiah to personally present the prestigious inaugural Thagaisal Thamizhar Award instituted by the Tamil Nadu Government. The state honor, carrying a citation plaque and a cash prize of ten lakh rupees, was established by the DMK administration to recognize eminent personalities who made monumental lifetime contributions to the Tamil community and the nation at large.
Comrade Sankaraiah, who completed one hundred inspiring years of age, played an active role in the Quit India movement, enduring eight years of rigorous imprisonment in British colonial jails alongside legendary patriots. He later served as a dedicated trade union organizer, peasant leader, and elected legislator, fighting relentlessly for working-class rights and secular democracy. In a touching gesture of ideological selflessness, Sankaraiah immediately donated the entire award money of ten lakh rupees to the Chief Minister Public Relief Fund for pandemic relief.
Stalin personal gesture of honoring Sankaraiah at his doorstep reflected his deep respect for subaltern freedom fighters and progressive working-class movements. His initiative established a noble precedent of state gratitude toward selfless political leaders who shaped democratic rights.
