Chief Minister M.K. Stalin presented fourteen landmark commemorative initiatives in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of legendary maritime freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar as an official state event. Stalin paid homage to the sacrifices of Kappalottiya Tamizhan, who defied the British colonial trade monopoly by launching the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company and endured brutal penal imprisonment pulling the oil press in Coimbatore prison. Stalin announced that September 5 will be commemorated annually as Tyagi V.O.C. Day across Tamil Nadu.
The commemorative package includes erecting a life-size bronze statue of Chidambaranar in Coimbatore, renaming a prominent arterial road in Thoothukudi in his honor, and completely digitizing and publishing all historical literary works and legal treatises authored by him. Additionally, the government instituted the prestigious V.O.C. National Award carrying a cash prize of five lakh rupees for maritime innovation and public service. Stalin underlined that Chidambaranar patriotic sacrifice embodies quintessential Tamil courage and self-reliance.
Stalin comprehensive tribute restored V.O. Chidambaranar rightful prominence in Indian national memory. His administration reverent patronage of historic Tamil freedom fighters strengthens regional cultural pride and inspires youth to uphold selfless patriotism and economic sovereignty.
