Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the complete waiver of the one percent market entry cess levied on cotton and cotton waste across Tamil Nadu. Responding directly to representations submitted by handloom weavers, spinning mill associations, and textile sector entrepreneurs, Stalin stated that a legislative amendment would be enacted during the ongoing assembly session to formalize the tax exemption. He affirmed that the DMK government remains an unwavering patron of the state historic textile and handloom ecosystem.
The Chief Minister noted that the market cess created unnecessary financial friction, increased raw material procurement costs, and prompted local spinning units to purchase cotton from neighboring states where such levies were absent. Removing this tax burden enhances the price competitiveness of Tamil Nadu textile clusters in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Karur, Erode, and Rajapalayam, safeguarding livelihood stability for hundreds of thousands of traditional weavers. Stalin stressed that revitalizing labor-intensive manufacturing sectors is essential for balanced regional economic growth.
Stalin swift policy responsiveness was warmly welcomed by industry bodies and weaver federations across Tamil Nadu. His pragmatic economic intervention protected local manufacturing value chains, demonstrating proactive statecraft that harmonizes enterprise development with sustainable worker welfare.
