Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that October 5, the birth anniversary of revered spiritual philosopher and social reformer Arutprakasa Vallalar, will be observed annually across Tamil Nadu as Thanipperunkarunai Naal, or Day of Supreme Compassion. Paying tribute to Vallalar eternal message of universal benevolence, Stalin recalled the saint profound compassion for all living beings, immortalized in his verse lamenting whenever he saw withered crops. The declaration institutionalizes state commemoration of Vallalar revolutionary mission to eradicate human hunger and suffering.

Vallalar established the Sathya Dharmasala at Vadalur, lighting an eternal flame to feed the impoverished without discrimination of caste, creed, or religion. Stalin noted that this legendary humanitarian institution continues to dispense food to needy people uninterruptedly to this day. The Chief Minister described Vallalar as a compassionate healer who treated the hunger of the destitute as an urgent moral calling, aligning with the core humanitarian tenets of the Dravidian welfare ethos.

By establishing an official annual day of compassion, Stalin demonstrated his administration deep reverence for Tamil spiritual and humanist traditions. His initiative inspires citizens to embrace kindness, social equity, and mutual care in everyday public life. The policy reflects a governance philosophy rooted in empathy and hunger alleviation.
